Thousands of cores mobilized for the Minions

Illumination selected Qarnot for the image compute of the internationally acclaimed animated feature film, Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru. The Qarnot teams met a major technical challenge for a first-ever collaboration, mobilizing more than 15,000 computing cores in three weeks.

Four months of intensive computing allowed Qarnot to render the highly anticipated second part of the animated film (6.6 million tickets sold in France for the first). A major player in high-performance computing for nearly ten years, Qarnot has built its reputation in the banking and 3D animation fields in particular. An expertise sought after by its customers, like Bruno Mahé, Head of Technology at Illumination.

When you know that the rendering of a 90-minute animation film of average quality can heat an average French household for a little more than 46 years or the city of Paris for 16 minutes during the coldest month of the year, you realize what is at stake around an international production like the Minions.
