We founded Qarnot almost ten years ago, willing to explore an ecological and quite basical idea: reusing waste heat from computing servers to heat buildings.
Like every machine, a computer that runs produces heat. Way too often, this heat is lost, especially in data centers that have to be cooled to keep on working.

This is how the computing-heater took shape. It embeds microprocessors as heat sources. Following our distributed approach of computing, each computing-heater may be considered as one mini data-center.

Ecological heat, silent product, adjustable heat intensity: the computing-heater had to meet several major technological and scientific challenges.

R&D is one of the key elements of Qarnot’s successes! We wished to go further exploiting this idea and decided to develop in-house a digital boiler, which could produce hot water up to 60°C. Following the same logic, we recently launched a system that heats warehouses  with waste heat from computers.

Qarnot makes the difference with its extremely reliable and recognized hardware, but also with the infrastructure behind: a platform, the Q•Ware, which automates the secured distribution of computations, respecting the heating instructions of the hardware users. The more these users need heat, the more computations are sent in their computing-heater or digital boiler. If they don’t wish anymore heat, no more computations are sent, as it may happen in summer!

During summer, computations are mostly ran on digital boilers that work all year long, or on our ScaleMax infrastructure.

Of course, yes! We are actually dealing with two very distinct kinds of clients:

  • computing clients on the one hand, who buy to Qarnot hours of computing power: banks, 3D animation studios, research laboratories, industrials… This computing power is useful and wanted in numerous sectors: artificial intelligence, fluid dynamics, 3D rendering, simulations…
  • heating clients on the other hand, who buy to Qarnot an ecological technology to heat water or buildings.

Qarnot does ensure the interface between these two different environments!

Today, Qarnot is a French SME of more than 30 people: dynamic, creative, fully committed to the environmental transition.
